They will eventually spend the third anniversary of their participation in the invasion of the Capitol under bars. Jonathan Pollock, his sister Olivia and Joseph Hutchinson were arrested early Saturday at a ranch in Groveland, Florida, where they were hiding. They will appear in federal court in the central city of Ocala on Monday. The three suspects are charged with assaulting public officials, disturbing public order on the Capitol grounds and violent trespassing without authorization.

Yet, until now, Jonathan Pollock had managed to be undetectable. Police offered a $30,000 bounty for information leading to the whereabouts of the 24-year-old welder, who was "considered armed and dangerous." His sister Olivia and Joseph Hutchinson, an employee of the Pollock family's gun store, had been wanted since last March. The pair had been released pending trial, but had fled, according to our correspondent in New York, Carrie Nooten.

A sprawling investigation

The FBI has not yet given details of their capture, but it has not failed to communicate about this symbolic arrest which shows how much the federal agency is mobilized in this sprawling investigation still ongoing. In 35 months, U.S. authorities have indicted more than 1,200 people in nearly all 50 states of the country for their participation in the January 6, 2021 insurrection that aimed to prevent the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory in the November 3, 2020 presidential election. More than half were convicted. One of the few rioters who left the country in March 2022 has sought asylum in Belarus.

Donald Trump has never conceded defeat in this election and vigorously denies inciting his supporters to attack the seat of Congress. The central question of his responsibility for this historic event, which could result in his possible ineligibility for the 2024 presidential election, will be examined on 8 February by the Supreme Court. For the time being, he remains the overwhelming favorite in the Republican primaries.

According to a poll released this week, conducted jointly by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland, 39 percent of Americans believe the storming of the Capitol was the result of an FBI conspiracy.
