The United Nations said 61 trucks carrying medical supplies, food and water had unloaded their cargo in northern Gaza on Saturday, out of 248 trucks of humanitarian aid that have arrived in the besieged enclave since the truce between the Palestinian resistance and Israel came into effect.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement that 11 ambulances, three buses and a flat medical bed were delivered to Shifa Hospital, which was attacked, stormed and destroyed parts of the Israeli army.

The Israeli army claims that this hospital is the main command center for Hamas operations in the Gaza Strip, which the resistance denies.

"The longer the truce lasts, the more humanitarian aid agencies have been able to send more aid to and through Gaza," the OCHA statement said, thanking the Palestinian and Egyptian Red Crescent Societies.

On the first day of the temporary truce between Israel and Hamas, 137 aid trucks arrived in Gaza, according to the United Nations.

Welcome exchange

"We welcome the release of more hostages today and renew our call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

"We also hope that the release of more Palestinian detainees will provide reassurance to their families and loved ones."

A second batch of hostages released by Hamas arrived in Israel, which in turn released a second group of Palestinian prisoners on Saturday, the second day of the truce after seven weeks of devastating war.

For weeks, the UN, international NGOs and many foreign capitals continued to call for a cessation of fighting, particularly for the delivery of emergency aid to the population of the Gaza Strip living in catastrophic humanitarian conditions.

On Friday, the Israeli occupation army withdrew from the Shifa Medical Complex in the Gaza Strip after about 10 days of storming and destroying parts of it.

Al-Jazeera correspondent said that the occupation forces withdrew from Al-Shifa Hospital, adding that the occupation blew up facilities for the hospital, including electricity generators, oxygen pumps and x-ray machines. The Israeli occupation forces also carried out explosions in some sections and buildings of the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip.
