A reporter asked: China has assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for November, what are China's thoughts on the work of the Security Council this month?

Wang Wenbin: China has been rotating as President of the UN Security Council for November since November 11. Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, has briefed the media and UN Member States on China's consideration of the work of the rotating presidency of the Security Council.

The situation in Gaza is at the top of the Council's agenda this month. It is imperative to promote a ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties, a humanitarian catastrophe on a larger scale, and a spillover of the conflict. As the rotating presidency of the Security Council, China will respond to the call of the international community, strengthen coordination with all parties concerned, especially Arab countries, uphold justice and build consensus, and push the Security Council to take responsible and meaningful actions in a timely manner to de-escalate the conflict, protect civilians, alleviate the humanitarian situation and resume the peace process, and bring the Palestinian question back to the two-state solution.

This month, the Security Council will also consider a number of regional hotspots, including Syria, Yemen, Central Africa and Somalia. China also proposes that the Security Council hold an open debate on the theme of "common development for lasting peace".

China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of the international order, and firmly upholds the international system with the United Nations at its core, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. The Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. China will push the Security Council to take action, strengthen solidarity and cooperation, enhance its authority and efficiency, properly fulfill its responsibilities under the UN Charter, support its good offices and diplomatic efforts, work to ease tensions, promote the political settlement of hotspot issues, and make positive efforts to safeguard common security.
