This year, 133,000 migrants have arrived in Italy, twice as many as last year. Many want to go to France.

Abdullah from Senegal has taken the train but has been sent back. If he does not succeed next time, he will walk along the "path of death".

"It's dangerous. It's completely dark," he says.

Many of the migrants sleep outdoors, under the city's bridges. Families with children have the opportunity to sleep and eat at Caritas.

"Since June 11, 2015, 47 people have died trying to cross into France. Not in Libya, in the Mediterranean or along the Balkan route. They died here," said Christian Papini, head of Caritas of Ventimiglia.
