Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said Iran was setting up an airport in southern Lebanon to allow attacks on Israel.

At the "Anti-Terrorism Policy Conference" at Reichmann University in Herzliya, Gallant showed aerial photographs of what he said was an airport built by Iran with the aim of achieving "terrorist goals" against Israel.

Gallant gave no further details, but added that the site could accommodate medium-sized aircraft.

The place mentioned by Galant is near the Lebanese village of Birkat Jabbour and the Lebanese city of Jezzine, about 20 kilometers north of the border town of Metulla.

Reuters quoted a non-Israeli source familiar with the site as saying the airport could accommodate large drones, some of them armed, similar to those produced by Iran.

The source added that drones that may take off from this site could be used for internal and external operational activities, but stated that the nature and direction of the runway indicate that it will most likely be used internally.

The source pointed out that Hizbullah is making significant investments in drone technology.
