On August 8, the Ministry of Water Resources launched a drought prevention level IV emergency response for four provinces and autonomous regions: Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai and Ningxia.

Data show that since June this year, the cumulative rainfall in most of northwest China has been 6~2% less than the same period of the year, and the amount of water coming from the main stream of the upper reaches of the Yellow River is nearly 4% less than the same period of the year. Affected by the continuous lack of rainfall and water, the drought in the northwest region gradually appeared.

As of August 8, 17.2003 million mu of arable land and 3 million mu of grassland were affected by drought, and 17,1 people and 05,57 large livestock were unable to drink water due to drought, mainly in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai and other places in the northwest region. In addition, there are also droughts in Hubei and Hunan.

Wang Wei, Director of the Drought Fighting Division of the Department of Water and Drought Disaster Prevention of the Ministry of Water Resources: According to forecasts, there may still be no effective rainfall in most of the arid areas of the northwest before the end of August, the amount of water coming from rivers will continue to be low, and the drought may continue to develop, and the duration will be longer and more severe.

In view of the current drought in northwest China and other regions, the Ministry of Water Resources, while doing a good job in flood prevention and flood control, aims to ensure the safety of drinking water for urban and rural residents, ensure the safety of water for large-scale breeding and large livestock, and ensure the seasonal irrigation water demand of crops in irrigated areas. At present, the Ministry of Water Resources has sent four working groups and expert groups to guide and help local governments to do a good job in fighting drought and ensuring water supply.
