At the same time, as noted in the study, Russians over 60 years old are more likely to be afraid of bacteria and viruses - 22% (against 2% among 18-24-year-olds).

In addition, according to the survey, 12% of Russians are afraid of confined spaces.

To a lesser extent, Russians have phobias such as fear of public speaking (glossophobia) and fear of flying on an airplane (aerophobia) - 11% and 10%, respectively.

Women are afraid of flying on an airplane twice as often as men (13% vs. 7%), another "female" fear is fear of thunder and lightning, brontophobia (15% vs. 2% among men), in general, 9% of Russians experience it.

According to the survey, the older generation is afraid of thunderstorms more often - 16%, as well as rural residents - 14%. Every tenth respondent is afraid of the crowd (9%), this is called demophobia.

At the same time, residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg pointed to it a little more often - 13%.

The All-Russian telephone survey "VTsIOM-Sputnik" was conducted on June 17, 2023. The survey involved 1.6 thousand Russians aged 18 years. The survey method is a telephone interview based on a stratified random sample extracted from a complete list of cell phone numbers used in Russia.

Earlier, VTsIOM reported that 24% of Russians would like to fly to Mars.
