Our data shows that the death toll from the conflict is higher than previously reported and that, while the junta is clearly the main culprit, anti-junta forces also have a lot of blood on their hands. " said one of the two co-authors of the study, Stein Tønnesson, in a statement.

The report puts the number of civilians killed "for political reasons" between 6 February 337 and 1 September 2021 at 30,2022, and 2,614 injured over the same period.

This toll is much higher than the often partial ones circulating, including in international institutions.

Fear of an even heavier toll

According to the report, nearly half of the victims, or about 3,003, are attributable to the regime: army, police and militias, 2,152 to armed opposition groups, 12 to other civilians affiliated neither to the regime nor to opponents, and finally 1,170 to undetermined actors.

«

This is a higher number than those usually quoted in the media and yet it is only an estimate, based on deaths reported in reliable media. ", explain the co-authors who fear an even heavier toll.

Alleging massive fraud, the Burmese military annulled the legislative elections won by Aung San Suu Kyi's party and overthrew her government. Since then, the junta has orchestrated a full-scale crackdown on any dissenting voice, arresting more than 23,000 people, according to a local monitoring group.
