Will Donald Trump be able to claim a second term as President of the United States in 2024? The 45th American president sees in any case the legal troubles multiply: among other cases, he is targeted by 37 charges, including "withholding information on national security" and "obstruction of justice" in the case of the White House archives, according to the indictment made public Friday, June 9.

The former tenant of the White House, who had taken boxes of files when leaving Washington, is also accused of false testimony and having colluded with his assistant Walt Nauta to hide documents requested by the federal police.

Nuclear secrets

US nuclear secrets were among the documents illegally kept by Donald Trump after he left the White House, according to the indictment of Friday, June 9.

"The classified documents Trump kept in boxes included information about the defense capabilities of the United States and foreign countries" and "about U.S. nuclear programs," according to the document. Their potential "dissemination would have endangered the national security of the United States," prosecutors add.

An ex-personal assistant soon to be charged?

Donald Trump announced the same day that a former personal assistant and possible leading witness in the case, would also be indicted by the federal justice in the case of the archives.

The former US president did not detail the charges against Walt Nauta, a military man attached to the presidency during Donald Trump's term before leaving the administration to continue working alongside him after his 2020 defeat.

"I just learned that the 'thugs' of the Department of Justice will indict Walt Nauta, a wonderful man," Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.

Joe Biden washes his hands of it

The current President Joe Biden assured Friday, June 9, that he had no contact with the Minister of Justice, Merrick Garland, about the historic indictment of his predecessor Donald Trump in the case of secret documents that the latter had kept.

"I haven't spoken to him at all and I won't talk to him. And I have no comment on that," he told a reporter who asked him about it. Supporters of the former Republican president accuse Joe Biden of instrumentalizing justice before the 2024 presidential election, which could see the two men clash again.
