British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak arrived in Washington on Tuesday evening for a two-day visit, during which he will discuss with US President Joe Biden the role of the United Kingdom in the global regulation of artificial intelligence in the future.

Sunak Biden will meet on Thursday at the White House to reaffirm their unwavering support for Ukraine after the destruction of a major hydroelectric dam in the south of the country, which Moscow and Kiev have accused each other.

Sunak is also seeking to improve relations with Washington, which have fallen under his predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.

In terms of managing the development of artificial intelligence, Sunak would like London to be the seat of the global regulator, according to British media.

The United States is in direct discussions with the European Union to implement a commitment made by Group of Seven leaders in April to work for the "responsible use" of the technology.

British media reported that Sunak will push the nomination of his defense minister Ben Wallace for the post of secretary general of NATO to succeed the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg, whose term ends next October.

Stoltenberg, 64, was appointed to head NATO in 2014 and is about to end his three-time term.

Ben Wallace, a former soldier and reserve officer, is "one of the most popular ministers in conservative governments" and recently expressed his aspiration to succeed the NATO secretary-general.

On Saturday, Downing Street announced that the British prime minister planned to work to establish a "close and frank" relationship with the US president.

Biden invited Sonak to visit the White House in March, when the British prime minister was in California for the AUKUS summit between Washington, London and Canberra to mark the launch of an ambitious nuclear-powered submarine program, angering Paris.
