Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202306h32, 01 June 2023

Listen to the rest of the story told by historian Virginie Girod about Artemisia, queen of Halicarnassus and Asia Minor. As the fighting progressed, the Persians gained ground on Greece. Faced with the invader, the Athenian strategist Themistocles relies on the gods: he thinks that if the final battle takes place in the narrow bay of Salamis, the Greeks will win. Xerxes must adapt his strategy: to fight on land, or at sea. While her vassals want to fight at sea, the only female voice of the audience rises, that of Queen Artemisia. According to her, it would be more prudent and effective to attack on land. But King Xerxes decides: the fight will take place at sea. At the fateful moment, the Greeks gained the advantage over the Persian fleet. Artemis is the only woman to participate in the Battle of Salamis. Already respected for her war record, the queen was again noticed, and admired, during this battle.
