The Church of Sweden has stepped up awareness and monitoring of the issue. But while sharing concerns about what an AI can be used for, the Church also sees many benefits in the power of AI.

"There are fantastic opportunities with it. We can energy-optimize things and it can handle amazing amounts of data. But there are also risks," says Susanne Rappman, bishop of the diocese of Gothenburg.

"Politicians must take responsibility"

Now she is calling for politicians who familiarize themselves more deeply with the AI issue and take greater responsibility. She does not see the development as an option.

"Man is a curious creature, he tries to get to both the moon and Mars. But there needs to be a reflection, we need politicians who can do more and can thus take responsibility.

No marriage for AI

But even if a machine becomes self-aware, gains emotions and learns to think like a human, it will not be welcome as a member of the Church of Sweden. Thus, it misses the chance for holidays such as baptisms or weddings.

"I think we stick to people," says Susanne Rappmann.

So that an AI should get married in church is out of the question?

"No, it's not.
