In 1978, Zhejiang University prepared to establish a major in cultural relics and museology, and in 2008, the university's first-level doctoral program in archaeology was approved by the Ministry of Education. Over the years, the archaeology of Zhejiang University has initially built a disciplinary framework of Chinese archaeology, foreign archaeology, scientific and technological archaeology, cultural relics protection, cultural heritage and museums.

Liu Bin, director of the Museum of Art and Archaeology of Zhejiang University and professor of the School of Art and Archaeology, said that the establishment of the discipline of archaeology marks that Zhejiang University has built a whole chain of archaeological talent training from undergraduate, master, doctoral to postdoctoral level.

The planned courses include Paleolithic Archaeology, Neolithic Archaeology, Xia Shangzhou Archaeology, Han and Tang Archaeology, Song, Yuan, and Ming Archaeology, Archaeological Theory and Methods, Scientific and Technological Archaeology, Introduction to Archaeological Management, Botanical Archaeology, Archaeological Anthropology, Chinese Paleography, Buddhist Archaeology, Field Archaeology (including teaching practice), etc.

Among them, the teaching practice of field archaeology will be closely linked to cooperative units such as the Zhejiang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology.
