Prevalence and evolution of sleep problems

In Spain, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, the overall prevalence of sleep disorders is 50.6% in men and 58.1% in women. In the older age groups, women have a higher prevalence. (1). But this problem, which is increasingly worrying, does not only occur in our country, but is worldwide. According to data from the Mintel 2022 study, 61% of English consumers have sleep problems after the pandemic, 38% of Japanese consumers would relieve stress by sleeping better and 77% of Canadian consumers value that the functional active ingredients of drinks are natural.

And it is not only adults who find it difficult to sleep, around 20% of Spanish children have difficulties with sleep throughout their development (2). Thus, according to data from the Mintel 2022 study, 64% of American parents focus on the quality of sleep of their children and 34% of English parents are interested in over-the-counter and natural remedies for children.

According to a study published in Advances in Nutrition, a healthy diet is associated with a host of favorable health outcomes, and emerging research highlights diet as a determinant of sleep quality. Dairy consumption might improve sleep quality by increasing endogenous melatonin production. The main sources of protein in dairy, casein, whey, and lactalbumin (A-LAC), are rich in TRP, and since it is a precursor to the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, dairy proteins may favorably affect sleep quality by increasing TRP intake. Milk consumption in Spain is 3,000 million liters and of these, just over 210 million liters are consumed between dinner and after dinner (3).
