Madrid: more than 5.2 million Madrilenians called to the polls

A total of 5,211,682 Madrilenians are called to the polls this Sunday, May 28, to elect 135 deputies of the XIII Legislature of the Assembly of Madrid, one deputy less than the previous elections held in 2021 because the number of seats has been adjusted to the data of the population of the Community of Madrid provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) dated 1 January 2022.

Of the total number of voters, 4,839,234 reside in the Community of Madrid and the rest, 372,448, reside abroad (CERA), reports Efe.

The countries with the largest number of voters are the United States (47,149), Mexico (37,037), the United Kingdom (32,089), France (25,507), Argentina (22,583) and Germany (21,662).

These figures do not coincide with those of the municipal elections, to which 4,902,421 voters are called, because in them they can vote, in addition to the Spaniards present in the census (CER), foreigners from the European Union resident in Spain (CERE), as well as from other countries with reciprocity agreements in force.

More than 200 million cost

With a cost of 204 million euros, elections are held that could turn the political board of municipalities such as Valencia, led by Joan Ribó de Compromís, or that of Barcelona of Ada Colau (Barcelona en Comú). The results will depend on a handful of votes and pacts will be key.

In Barcelona, the PSC candidate Jaume Collboni could snatch the key to the consistory to Colau in a dispute in which ERC could be decisive to tip the balance, while in Seville the PSOE-Con Andalucía and PP-Vox union also offers a very similar result, according to the latest CIS polls, and in Valladolid the sum of the popular with the party of Santiago Abascal could take the mayor's office from the PSOE, Efe reports.

28-M: Prelude to the next general elections in December

A hotly contested election, which could be the prelude to the next general elections in December and in which political change is at stake in up to seven regions.

The key places in this electoral map are the Valencian Community, Aragon, Castilla La Mancha, La Rioja, Melilla, Cantabria or the Canary Islands, while the cities of Barcelona, Seville and Valencia are also at risk of change, reports Efe.

The latest polls open the door to the PP in the Valencian Generalitat with the support of Vox, although sources of the Executive see clear the re-election of Ximo Puig. In some autonomies the Socialists will also depend on how their current coalition partners fare well, such as in Aragon, La Rioja, the Balearic Islands or the Canary Islands, where they govern with the left. Lucía Méndez analyzes in El 28-M measures the wear of Sánchez and the strength of Feijóo the high voltage that has been evidenced in this campaign that anticipates the possibility of a change of Government.
