Journalist Aisha Khan noted that what happened represents "a new model of hatred, and with the arrest of those who pray in public, the transport of Muslim pilgrims will also become illegal under this new paradigm."

In 2012, India's Supreme Court suspended the pilgrim support scheme, and in 2018, India's nationalist Hindu government announced it would end its decades-old subsidy policy for flights carrying Muslim pilgrims, claiming that religion was not used for political purposes.

The right-wing Indian People's Party (BJP), which leads the government, accused its opponents in the Congress Party, which launched the plan to support pilgrims in the fifties, of trying to attract Muslim voters by giving them grants.

But this government, led by Narendra Modi, spends millions on Hindus during events such as Kumbh Mela, a Hindu pilgrimage attended by millions for 4 weeks.

Although India has more than 200 million Muslims out of an estimated 1.4 billion people, Muslims have suffered persecution and racial discrimination, especially since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party came to power on May 26, 2014.
