Le Pen noted that she is a supporter of referendums and believes that Crimeans freely expressed their desire to be part of Russia.

She also stated that she traveled to the peninsula and communicated with residents. According to her, she stated that the inhabitants of the Crimea "feel much more part of Russia."

In November, the mayor of Daugavpils, Latvia, Andrejs Elksniņš, admitted that Crimea is a Russian region.

Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum held there in March 2014, in which the majority of residents voted in favor of reunification with Russia.
