The man who was injured is said to have been in the trunk of the A-tractor at the time of the crash and this is one of the reasons why the underage boy who was driving the vehicle is suspected of causing bodily harm and reckless driving.

Would warn individuals

In Sweden there are about 6,000 railway crossings, so-called level crossings. Some of them, like the one at the scene of the accident, are equipped with an E-signal. The light signals were placed where the public road network could not reach to warn individual landowners.

"It's a protection that was supposed to be on, for example, a field and a support for the farmer who is going to cross the railway," says Helena Rådbo, senior expert at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Four fatal accidents last year

Despite the fact that there are signs at the light signals stating how the signal works, accidents do occur. Last year, there were four fatal accidents at level crossings.

In 2017, three soldiers were injured when a military vehicle collided with the train at a similar crossing in Vagnhärad. Since then, that railway crossing has been equipped with a special boom to prevent more accidents.

The circumstances of some roads may also have changed, which means that more members of the public pass through the level crossings now than before.

Several should be removed

The Swedish Transport Administration has a government assignment to fix the level crossings that are judged to have a higher risk of accidents. By 2025, the plan is for them to fix just over 130.

"Either you put up a barrier system or you try to remove the level crossing completely, and build roads to another place where it is easier to cross the railway and we have good protection," says Helena Rådbo.
