The case has attracted a lot of attention in Thailand, not least because it involves serial murder using cyanide. The poison should be very difficult to get hold of in the country.

A survivor

The 36-year-old woman was initially arrested for nine suspected deaths that allegedly took place over several years. However, during the police investigation, the suspicions were increased to 14 cases.

Only one person – the 15th intended fatal victim – survived the assassination attempt, Deputy National Police Chief Surachate Hakpar told a press conference.

"The victim managed to get out of her car but once she got into an ambulance she lost consciousness and her heart stopped beating. Technically, she was dead, but fortunately, the doctor managed to revive her in the hospital.

Money an ulterior motive

According to the police, the suspected woman had swindled the victims out of close to one million kronor. It was when the people demanded to get their money back that she resorted to poison.

The arrested woman was previously married to a senior police officer and he too is now accused of fraud, corruption and embezzlement related to the murders. Both deny the charges.

The woman, who is also four months pregnant, is now charged with 14 counts of premeditated murder and one count of attempted murder. At the same time, the police are investigating three more potential cases.

If convicted of the murders, she will go down in history as one of Thailand's worst serial killers in modern times.
