The intense fighting in Bachmut has dominated reporting on the war in Ukraine lately. Now there are many indications that Russia has taken full control of the city, while Ukraine continues to have strongholds around Bakhmut.

But there are other places that are likely to be in focus in the future. Not least in view of the upcoming Ukrainian spring offensive.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi, there are mainly three regions, the most important of which is the Crimean peninsula.

"If Ukraine can threaten Crimea, it will probably become obvious to Russia that what they call their special military operation has no prerequisites for success," he said.

"A limited period"

It is unclear exactly when Ukraine's counteroffensive is supposed to begin. Joakim Paasikivi believes that it will start in May, but it may also take until the beginning of June.

"The longer you wait from the Ukrainian side, the less time you have to fight until the autumn rains come. There is a limited period of favorable weather, and it ends sometime in September or October, he says.
