The public prosecutor's office in Verden is investigating employees of the district administration in Lüchow-Dannenberg, Lower Saxony, on suspicion of bribery. An employee had been arrested in the meantime and has since been released, the public prosecutor's office said at the request of the German Press Agency.

There are a total of eight suspects. The background to the investigations is possible irregularities in the issuance of residence permits. Previously, the »NDR« had reported.

Suspects' homes and offices searched

Whether all the suspects work in the district administration, the prosecutor's office did not answer. The district administration could not be reached for comment on Saturday.

In the proceedings, residential and office premises were searched more than a week ago at several locations in the county. Among other things, in a building of the district administration. The investigators did not initially provide any further information, citing the ongoing investigation.
