The new vice-president, i.e. number two of the Sudan Sovereignty Council, which – officially at least – still governs the country, is Malik Agar. The decree of the armed forces appointing him to this post was published on Friday, just after the announcement of the dismissal of General Hemedti.

He who was already a member of the Council had publicly supported General al-Burhan's 2021 coup, even leading to a split within his movement. Because he is also the leader of the former rebellion of the SPLM-North and he is close to the government of South Sudan, bordering his home state of Blue Nile of which he was the governor under the regime of Omar al-Bashir.

Well-known military figures

In another decree, General al-Burhan also strengthened his direct entourage with well-known military figures. General Shamseldin Kabbashi, his spokesman since the fall of the al-Bashir regime, is appointed deputy head of the armed forces.

As for General Yassir al-Atta, who was part of the first junta in 2019, he is appointed "assistant to the latter, as well as General Ibrahim Jader Ibrahim, who served as economic adviser and diplomat for the military in power, including the UN.
