During the spring, the police in Umeå have seized more drugs than in the whole of 2022. One method used to find the drugs is for the police to exchange drugs and sharp weapons for sugar and dummies. In this way, the police have been able to get hold of the "owners" of the weapons and drugs without it ending up on the street.

The Supreme Court has now, in a prejudentizing ruling, made the method virtually unusable for the police as the court believes that "danger of the completion of the crime being excluded" after the police seized the real weapon and replaced it with a dummy.

Sharp weapons are allowed to remain

One consequence of the new ruling is that situations become more stressful for the police.

"Today we are forced to leave sharp weapons lying around and have to intervene despite the fact that there are serious criminals in situations where there are weapons and explosives, it goes without saying that it is not a good position," says Thomas Palmgren, head of investigation.
