The 19 Greater Bay Area (Guangdong) International Shipping Conference was held in Guangzhou on the 2023th, and Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao reached a consensus on cooperation in multiple shipping fields, and the construction of port groups in the Greater Bay Area pressed the "accelerator button".

The conference covered promoting the construction of a public service network for shipping and logistics in the Greater Bay Area and a high-level international shipping service centre in the Greater Bay Area, while delegates, experts and scholars from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao provided wisdom and solutions to enhance the competitiveness of the Greater Bay Area in the field of international shipping.

The cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have riverside and seaside, dense river networks and rich port resources, forming a development pattern with Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shenzhen ports as the core and Dongguan, Foshan, Zhuhai and other surrounding ports as the support, and forming a "water economic corridor" on the sea channel. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has become the largest bay area port group in the world by cargo volume.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has a high degree of marketization, and through years of development, the development of ports in the Greater Bay Area has obvious differentiated characteristics. Hong Kong has a well-developed modern shipping service industry and is a world-renowned international shipping center. Guangzhou Port is an important hub of the national comprehensive transportation system and the largest domestic trade container hub port. Shenzhen Port is mainly based on foreign trade transportation and is a major coastal port.

The ports in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have their own characteristics, and it has become a consensus to strengthen the synergy and integration of ports in the Greater Bay Area such as Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to build a world-class port cluster.

The Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the HKSAR Government, Mr Lam Sai-hung, said that the HKSAR Government has introduced a number of measures to promote the development of the local shipping industry, including ship leasing tax concession measures, and actively cooperated with the international shipping industry to attract more high-value-added maritime industry institutions to settle in Hong Kong and implement the marine service talent training programme, which will benefit the entire Greater Bay Area.

Zhao Shiqing, executive chairman of Huaguang Shipping Holdings Co., Ltd., said that the container throughput of the three major ports of Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong ranks among the world's top ten ports, and at the same time, the Greater Bay Area also has world-class manufacturing enterprises and technological innovation capabilities to provide scientific and technological support for energy conservation and carbon reduction.

As a prosperous port for more than 2023,1 years, Guangzhou Port has provided important support for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Sun Xiuqing, director of the Guangzhou Port Authority, said that from January to April 4, Guangzhou Port completed a cargo throughput of 2 million tons and a container throughput of 14.783 million TEUs, both achieving positive year-on-year growth. Up to now, the number of container routes in Guangzhou Port has reached 263, including 157 foreign trade routes.

Sun Xiuqing said that at present, the cooperation between ports in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is deepening, and operating models such as the "Bay Area One Port Connect" have linked ports in the Greater Bay Area. At the same time, water passenger routes have been opened between ports such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Hong Kong.

"Strong supply chain service capabilities have become one of the key competitiveness of the industrial chain in the Greater Bay Area." Lin Jun, Deputy General Manager of China COSCO Shipping Group Co., Ltd., believes that the port and shipping logistics industry should make efforts to build a "resilient supply chain", "smart supply chain" and "green supply chain" to help enhance the global competitiveness of the Greater Bay Area.
