The G7 summit in Hiroshima began on Friday and will continue over the weekend, when Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is expected to appear.

The G7 countries are the world's leading industrial nations that are also democracies – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

A talking point ahead of the meeting has been the question of possibly sending US-made F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. European countries, including the Netherlands, have previously expressed a willingness to do so, but have been rejected by the United States.

But according to information to several media outlets, President Joe Biden has softened on the issue and during the meeting in Hiroshima on Friday said he is willing to allow Ukrainian pilots to be trained to fly the planes.

The Ukrainian government has been clear in its desire to have F-16s delivered as they would increase their ability to control their airspace.

New sanctions

During Friday's meeting, the G7 countries agreed to impose new sanctions on Russia. These include tighter export restrictions on industrial machinery, tools and technology, as well as new sanctions against a number of players involved in the Russian defense industry.

"Today's decision will further impair Putin's ability to conduct his barbaric invasion," U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said in a statement.
