SMHI has issued a red warning in the Torne River downstream and the confluence with the Lainio River and down to Pello. The combination of snowmelt and heavy rain has, among other things, submerged Highway 99 between Juoksengi and Niskanpää.

"I was out looking this morning and there was a lot of water next to the road. But it has increased rapidly during the day, says Anna Jaako to SVT.

The extreme water flow causes problems for the general store.

"We're open on Saturdays, so we'll see if customers find their way here and if deliveries arrive. The forecast is constantly being moved forward, so you are worried about how long it will last.

Must close drain and toilet

It's not just the store that's causing headaches. She herself lives in the southern part of the village where the road is closed.

"I'll probably make it home, but we have basements and have been told to close drains and toilets to avoid flooding," says Anna Jaako.

Preliminarily, the closed road is not expected to open until Monday 22 May. But the Swedish Transport Administration announces that the end time may change.
