Previously, the county administrative board has driven out firewood and coal to the more than 30 wood stores that are located at various nature reserves around the island, but now the replenishment is paused.

The reason is that there is no longer enough money to be able to continue, because this year the budget has almost halved compared to previous years. It writes the County Administrative Board of Gotland in a press release.

Not allowed to cut down trees

"It's obviously sad, as we know that our barbecue areas are appreciated, and that many people are happy to use the wood we have laid out," says Olle Karlsson, head of the nature conservation unit at the County Administrative Board of Gotland. He also adds that it is not allowed to cut down trees or the like in the areas when the wood is exhausted.

Prio in Östergötland

As it looks now, the County Administrative Board of Östergötland will continue to run out firewood, but the reduced budget means that it may have to rethink in the future.

Instead, they have had to prioritize other things, including measures against, for example, the spruce bark beetle and the control of invasive species on land, writes Johannes Kullered, head of unit at the County Administrative Board of Östergötland in an email to SVT.

Friluftsfrämjandet has expressed concern about the savings. Hear more in the clip below.
