In September 2021, Jönköping City Council voted in favour of a new swimming pool. But in April, the Moderates reversed the bathhouse issue and sealed a private player as construction and operation manager for the new bathhouse.

Now the governing parties in the municipality agree that the proposal will be voted down as they want to start from the first decision. The vote will take place on 21 June.

"It's a huge investment and if the Moderates' proposal were to go through, we would have had to start all over again," says Ann-Marie Nilsson.

Has become more expensive

When the decision on a new bathhouse was approved, the construction had been estimated at a cost of SEK 884 million. But at the beginning of the year, a new announcement came that the price had risen to SEK 1.1 billion.

According to Joakim Dahlström (M), opposition councillor in Jönköping, the proposal is a possible alternative to reduce costs for the municipality.

"Through a fixed monthly rent from a private owner, you can control costs better," says Joakim Dahlström.

Missing out on more opportunities

Joakim Dahlström believes that a municipal swimming pool will cost the municipality in the future. With a private player as owner, you avoid several unexpected costs.

– You will miss other fun projects as it will be expensive, says Joakim Dahlström.
