Charging for parking cars in the city according to their weight is the new idea of the ecologist city of Lyon and it will be a first in France. The measure will not be effective until next year. Clearly, large SUVs will pay more to park, while small city cars will be entitled to a discount.

A surprising idea that should not delight some inhabitants of the Lyon metropolis. In a year's time, what Lyoners will have to pay for parking will depend on the weight of their car. Thus, a standard rate will be applied for vehicles weighing between 1000 and 1725 kg, such as a Clio, a Golf or a 2008, which represents 3/4 of the vehicles circulating in the Rhône prefecture.

A higher price for large cars

On the other hand, if the vehicle exceeds this weight, the parking rate will be higher. A decision that does not please at all the owners of these large vehicles. "This is an aberration. It consumes no more than a normal car. We are a little wider, but we can still park in normal places. This is completely ridiculous. We always need a scapegoat," Pierre told Europe 1.

"I don't agree either. I have an SUV and I don't want to pay more. For me, a car is a car. Small or big. This is discrimination. This is not normal," adds Thierry.

It is important to note that a family with more than three children will not pay this increased rate. But at the other end of the chain, owners of small vehicles, such as a Fiat 500, will pay half price. "I think it's a good idea. I bought a small car precisely to be able to go to town, "says Catherine at the microphone of Europe 1. "We pollute less. We take up less space so it's a form of reward," concludes Titouan.
