This is the second victory in this Giro for the world champion who had flown over the inaugural time a week ago.

On Sunday, in the rain and cold, he was significantly less sovereign, beating Ineos' Britons, Geraint Thomas and Tao Geoghegan Hart, by just one and two seconds respectively.

The 23-year-old Belgian, who had ceded his pink jersey to Norwegian Tobias Leknessund on Tuesday, retakes the lead in the general classification.

He is now 47 seconds ahead of his great rival, Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who strongly limited the breakage in this new time, giving up only 17 seconds to the Belgian. The Giro will take a break on Monday, the first rest day of the race.
