The alarm came at 14 pm on Tuesday: There is a fire in the forest at Kullaberg, northeast of Ona bog.

The fire started in a high and hard-to-reach part of Kullaberg and rescue services from several units had to deploy tracked vehicles and work hard to be able to pull water hoses all the way up.

Got help from helicopter

Work to fight the fire went on all night.

The fire brigades were eventually helped by a rescue helicopter that waterbombed the fire time and time again and prevented further spread. In the end, the fire was extinguished.

"But the terrain was very difficult and one firefighter was injured in the foot," says fire chief Magnus Hedström.

Come still smoke

When SVT visited the site on Wednesday, staff from both the emergency services and the county administrative board – which manages the nature reserve – remained at the site to ensure that the flames did not flare up again in the strong wind. The ground was black-burned in the rugged wooded area and there was still smoke from scattered places in the fire-ravaged ground.

Be careful this summer

It is still unclear how the fire started, but according to the emergency services, there is an extremely high fire risk in northwest Skåne right now. If it is a hot summer, the risk of new forest fires may be imminent.

"We hope that people respect the risk of fires then and don't grill or smoke in the forest," says Per-Inge Persson from the county administrative board.
