• 28-M Sánchez announces ICO guarantees to guarantee 20% of the mortgage to young people and vulnerable families
  • Politics The new 20,000 homes in Sánchez do not yet have land available

The Government faces the elections on May 28 with the BOE, the Council of Ministers and the Budgets in its hand. And he has decided to accelerate. Since they were officially convened on April 3, the Executive of Pedro Sánchez has already committed about 10,000 million euros in electoral promises and new spending programs, announced in rallies and certified every Tuesday in Moncloa.

Sánchez tries to modulate the public debate towards the central axes on which the PSOE has decided to focus its campaign -housing, youth and environment-, before the demoscopic trends that detect an important transfer of young vote towards the PP. Only in real estate promises Sánchez has already committed 4,760 million euros in the last month.

The bulk of that cost corresponds to the 4,000 million of the ICO that the President of the Government advanced that he would allocate to finance 43,000 affordable rental homes. The announcement was made in Congress on April 19, during an appearance that was initially intended to report on the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

Six days later, this time in the Senate, Sánchez returned to the fray with the announcement of another 20,000 homes for social rent that would be built on land of the Ministry of Defense. El País published that Transport will pay about 500 million for the land, apart from the future cost of the promotion. The project will fall on the shoulders of the Public Business Land Entity (SEPES) that on April 4, a day after the elections were called, already received an injection of 260 million euros "to promote measures that serve to boost the supply of housing for affordable rent," according to Moncloa.

The guarantee of up to 20% of the mortgage for those under 35 years of age that is approved this Tuesday in the Council of Ministers will raise the bill of the Government's promises in housing. But it has not yet been quantified nor does it have the unanimous support of the Executive. Podemos has clearly positioned itself against a measure already applied by the communities of the Popular Party and that the purples assure that it only favors the bank. "It is infamous," the party said Monday while spokesman Pablo Fernández criticized that measures like this "caused the real estate bubble." Minister Raquel Sánchez explained that they hope to reach 50,000 young people with this program.

Sánchez, however, is not the only member of the Government who has pulled 'checkbook' from Moncloa in recent weeks. Yolanda Díaz also took advantage of the Council of Ministers on April 11 to announce the disbursement of 2,803 million euros for active employment policies, which the vice president stressed should be aimed especially at people over 45 years of age and represented "the largest economic endowment for these policies in history".

"Historic" games announced on the eve of going to the polls and branded as electoralism by the opposition, which this weekend launched against the announcement of the European Interrail financed at 50% for all young people under 30 years. A measure still without estimated cost, although it is expected to be below the 210 million for the cultural bonus of 400 euros received by 18-year-olds and which was renewed in March.

In recent days, Sánchez has also promised new investments of 1,307 million in Vocational Training and another 560 million in robotics teaching and programs against school dropout in public education. Games advanced by the president in his pre-campaign events and confirmed later in Moncloa. There they have joined other promises of public investment such as the 100 million approved for the digitalization of justice, in the midst of a strike campaign by professionals in the sector, another 110 million announced in new plans against depopulation and rural transformation, 30 million to attract high-level scientific researchers or the distribution of almost 300 million euros in funds for agriculture and livestock announced by Minister Luis Planas on last April 25.
