Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that presidential and parliamentary elections, expected on May 14, will be the first step to Turkey's strong ideals.

This came in a speech delivered on Wednesday during his participation in a mass gathering of his supporters in the northeastern province of Rize.

Erdogan called on all citizens to go to the polls on May 14 to cast their votes in the presidential and parliamentary elections.

"In 21 years, we (AKP governments) have accomplished projects that those who preceded us in ruling the country have not been able to accomplish over the past seventy years.

Erdogan added: "Together we broke the shackles imposed on the will of our people, together we took our country out of many storms to safety, together we confronted the treacherous attacks launched by terrorist organizations.

During his speech, the Turkish president reviewed – via giant screens – some of the projects carried out by his governments in the country since 2002.

Erdogan has promised his supporters more mega projects if he wins the next presidential election.

Voting begins in several countries

Turkish voters living in several areas, including Bulgaria, Kazakhstan and Poland, began heading to the polls today to cast their votes in the presidential and parliamentary elections.

On April 27, voting began for Turks who registered their places of residence outside the country's borders.

Voters across Turkey will go to the polls on the 14th of this month to choose their candidates in the presidential and parliamentary elections.
