The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency says that there is a significant risk of avalanches in the Kiruna mountains, southern Jämtland mountains and western Härjedalsfjällen.

On the website lavinprognoser.se, the authority writes that the weather produces an unfortunate combination that increases the likelihood of human-triggered avalanches: an avalanche-prone snow cover combined with fine weather and untracked slopes.

The public is therefore urged to exercise caution in the mountains and to avoid steep skiing.

Avalanche last Friday

There have been more avalanches recently. On Friday, three avalanches took place in Årefjällen, one of which was in the area around Östra ravinen, which is easily reached from the lifts and is a popular area for off-piste skiing.

"In the first call-in, it sounded like a person had been dragged along, but that person is now included in the party," says Viktor Brandt, internal officer at the rescue service, about the first avalanche.

Soldier died in February

In February, a soldier on K 4 in Arvidsjaur died during a military exercise on the southern slope of Kebenekaise.

Mountain rescuers and dogs came to the scene to search the area, as well as helicopters from the Maritime and Air Rescue Centre, among others. There, the soldier was found and taken seriously injured to Tromsø for treatment, but was later confirmed deceased.
