The leader, whose name has not been made public, was reportedly deeply involved in the August 2021 attack in which a suicide bomber set off an explosive device at Kabul International Airport. More than 180 people, including 13 U.S. military personnel, were killed.

The attack took place in connection with the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, in parallel with the United States leaving Afghanistan in chaotic forms after 20 years of military presence.

Thousands of people had made their way to the airport in desperation to escape when an ISIS Khorasan suicide bomber set off his explosive device.

IS Khorasan, named after a region in the area, has about 4,000 members and has sought to increase its influence in Afghanistan. They have carried out several deadly attacks even after the Taliban regained power in the country, the news agency AP reports.
