Kyiv may be left without the support of the West in the event of the failure of the widely discussed counteroffensive of the Ukrainian troops, writes The New York Times.

"Ukraine is preparing to launch a counteroffensive against Russian forces as early as next month, despite the enormous risks: in the absence of a decisive victory, Western support for Ukraine may weaken," the article says.

According to American journalists, without a decisive victory, Kiev may be under pressure to enter into negotiations to end or freeze the conflict.

Meanwhile, the authors of the NYT are of the opinion that the chance for Ukraine to show itself perfectly in the counteroffensive will also depend on US and NATO intelligence. At the same time, the newspaper writes, "serious success is not guaranteed, and its probability is by no means even necessary."

A publication of a similar nature appeared in the publication Politico. According to the authors of this material, the administration of US President Joe Biden is secretly preparing for the possibility that if Ukraine's spring counteroffensive does not live up to expectations, critics at home and foreign allies will argue that the United States has also failed.

Politico reports, citing U.S. officials, that Kiev is ready to reconsider its goals, and that achieving a more modest goal will be easier to present as a victory.

At the same time, if it is impossible to live up to expectations from a counteroffensive, foreign allies will begin to wonder how much more aid they will be able to allocate if Kyiv's victory seems more and more distant.

It should be noted that in recent months, the media have been systematically discussing the prospects for a Ukrainian counteroffensive and its possible timing. One of the central topics of such publications was the difficulties that allegedly prevent the start of the actions of the Ukrainian troops.

The authors of the Telegram channel "Military Chronicle" previously said that the refusal of the counteroffensive is not currently being considered by the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, however, during its preparation, Ukrainian units, as well as US and NATO supply forces, faced significant logistical problems.

In particular, the transfer of tanks, armored personnel carriers, fuel, ammunition to the front line and the accumulation of human resources are not going as fast as originally planned. As a result, the timing of the offensive can be officially shifted to the end of May - the beginning of June, and the offensive plan already approved by the United States, NATO and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine can be adjusted.

Subsequently, the coordinator for strategic communications of the National Security Council at the White House, John Kirby, said that the United States wants to make sure that the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian military will be successful. According to him, the direction and timing of these events will depend on the decision of Volodymyr Zelensky.

Commenting on recent publications about the likelihood of the failure of the counteroffensive, political scientist Ivan Mezyukho suggested that such materials appear in the Western media in order to prepare public opinion in light of the upcoming defeat of Ukraine on the battlefield.

"Washington, as it were, warns its society that the Zelensky regime will inevitably collapse and is preparing the ground in order to mitigate the Ukrainian defeat for the electoral positions of the current US President Joe Biden," the expert said in an interview with RT.

Note that the current President of the United States on April 25 announced his intention to run for a new term.

According to Mezyukho, White House military analysts understand that "even mathematically, Ukraine cannot win the battle with Russia." According to the expert, Washington sets a goal for Zelensky to strike at critical infrastructure facilities in Russia in order to then begin the negotiation process with Moscow.

"Today, the West does not expect Ukraine to defeat Russia. Rather, Washington is counting on dragging Russia into negotiations that are unfavorable for it, "the political scientist said.

In turn, military expert Vladislav Shurygin is of the opinion that the assumptions about the failure of the upcoming are absolutely logical, many experts talk about them.

Shurygin noted that the West provided Ukraine with all the reserves that Kiev asked for, so that the Ukrainian side would demonstrate the result in exchange.

At the same time, the expert continued, since September, Ukraine has not shown any successes necessary for the West. If the situation changes, Shurygin believes, then in the perception of the West, the assistance received by Kiev will be justified to fulfill the tasks set by the United States and NATO.

"If nothing happens, then it is obvious that this is a swelling of huge money into nowhere and it is easier to seek a compromise with Russia," the expert concluded.
