In an inflationary context, food prices exploded by nearly 16% in March compared to last year. Consequently, the French shun a number of products, which have become too expensive, as reported by a survey by the Circana Institute for "Le Parisien".

-60.5% in one year. Over the year 2023, foie gras sales have literally plummeted in France. It must be said that this dish, already expensive in normal times, has suffered the full force of the inflationary wave and is now displayed at a price that has become too high for many consumers. Several products considered too expensive suffer the same fate such as champagne, estimated at 21 euros per liter, or luxury beers whose sales have contracted by 20%.

Sales in drugstores fall by 72% in one year

But this inflation, which amounted to 16% for food products last March, pushes the French to conduct even more precise trade-offs, as Emilie Meyer, expert in consumer products at the Circana Institute, points out: "Overall, consumer products, sales are declining. People bought 5% fewer products than in the first quarter of 2022. And in arbitrations, there are indeed expensive products that will quickly increase the value of the shopping cart. And there are also other products such as fresh produce, fruit, vegetables, meat, fish which are expensive products and which have also experienced strong price increases."

In addition, between the end of sanitary measures and this general increase in prices, sales in parapharmacies fell by 72% over one year. The French buy far fewer masks, hydroalcoholic gels or soaps. Sales of household and personal hygiene products also fell by 15% for body care and 18% for broom kits and wipes. On the food side, canned and ready meals are neglected, as are certain drinks including flavored waters, cocktails and fresh fruit juices.
