Hungary will ban until next June the import of grain and other agricultural products from Ukraine to protect the interests of local producers, the official MTI news agency reported.

"Current market trends could cause such serious damage to Hungarian agriculture that extraordinary measures must be taken to prevent it," Minister Istvan Nagy said in a statement last night, alluding to low import prices from neighboring Ukraine.

The minister added that the European Union (EU) should take measures and rethink the corridors of solidarity, that is, a balanced distribution of Ukrainian products among EU countries.

The Hungarian ban is temporary and will last until June 30, which according to the official statement could be enough to adopt lasting measures in the EU and thus find a solution to the problem.

Poland on Saturday announced a temporary ban on imports of grain and dozens of other agricultural products from Ukraine.

Other Eastern European countries, such as Bulgaria and Romania have also asked Brussels for some solution, since their producers cannot compete with Ukrainian prices.

Relations between Hungary and Ukraine are tense, with Kiev accusing Budapest of supporting Russian interests, while Hungarians criticizing the alleged erosion of rights of ethnic minorities in the neighboring country, including some 150,000 Magyars.
