Former US President Donald Trump was questioned on Thursday by prosecutors in New York in a case related to falsification of financial data.

Trump appeared behind closed doors over a civil lawsuit filed against him by state attorney general Letitia James.

Trump, his company and three of his sons have been charged with inflating wealth in order to benefit from loans.

Reuters quoted a person familiar with the case as saying that during the session, which lasted several hours, the former president answered questions posed to him, while he had refused to answer 400 questions in the previous session last August.

According to Attorney General Letitia James, the former president, his sons and his companies received $250 million through "fraud."

Trump left a tower bearing his name in New York toward the prosecutor's office under heavy security after waving his hand to supporters.

"Ridiculous issue"

In posts on his platform Truth Social, the former US president described the whole issue as ridiculous as other issues and interference in the election.

It is noteworthy that this case is civil and not criminal, so any punishment resulting from it will be financial fines, and does not include any prison sentence. The trial of this case will begin later this year.

A limited number of supporters and opponents of Trump demonstrated in the vicinity of the New York Attorney General's Office.

Some opponents of the former president held up a banner that read: "No one is above the law."

Trump's questioning at the New York prosecutor's office comes a week after he appeared in a city court following criminal charges in another case, a historic first.
