The social network, bought last October by Elon Musk, has also applied this new label to the BBC, which is funded mainly by British households paying a fee.

On Tuesday, Twitter had attached to the NPR (National Public Radio) account the mention of "state-affiliated" media, labeling it the same as media owned by the Chinese or Russian governments.

US public radio had protested against this label and had stopped tweeting from its main account on Friday. Radio CEO John Lansing said Twitter's decision was "unacceptable."

On its account, which has more than 8.8 million followers, NPR had invited its listeners to "find it everywhere you can consult information".

NPR stated that it is funded primarily by advertising, patronage, and listener contributions, with little funding from federal sources.

Other radio accounts (covering political or music news, for example) had not received this mention from Twitter and continued to tweet.

Over the weekend, Twitter, which under the impetus of Elon Musk is in the process of redefining the certification of accounts on the social network, has quietly changed the label of NPR and the BBC for those of establishment "funded" by a government.

The episode comes a few days after Twitter stripped the New York Times of the official certification of its account, Elon Musk accusing the major daily, reputed rather progressive, of "propaganda".

The billionaire entrepreneur, also boss of Tesla, willingly shows contempt for the media. Lately, questions from the press to Twitter's communications department are sent back in automatic email, an emoticon in the shape of an etron.
