A Saudi government delegation visited the Iranian capital on Monday as part of the two countries' efforts to restore rapprochement, and a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry considered that the development of relations between the two parties will reflect positively on the countries of the region.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry tweeted that the Kingdom's delegation discussed the reopening of the embassy in Tehran and a consulate in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the two sides discussed reopening diplomatic missions.

Kanaani stressed that the development of relations between Tehran and Riyadh will reflect positively on the countries of the region. He added at a press conference that work is underway to open embassies in both countries.

There have been no diplomatic relations between the two countries in recent years.

Yesterday, the semi-official Iranian Students' News Agency reported that a technical delegation would visit Saudi Arabia this week to prepare for the reopening of the embassy in Riyadh.

This comes after a meeting between the Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers in Beijing last Thursday, in the first official meeting of its kind in more than 7 years.

The meeting took place after a Chinese-brokered agreement to resume relations between the two regional powers.

The Student News Agency returned to say that "the Iranian technical delegation will visit the Tehran embassy in Riyadh and make arrangements for the reopening of the Iranian embassy" in Saudi Arabia.
