The Brazilian Foreign Ministry announced that through an order signed by Brazilian President Lula on the evening of the 6th, "Brazil will re-become a member of the Union of South American Nations at this moment of returning to its main international alliance."

The announcement states that the order will take effect on May 5.

According to reports, on March 3 this year, in Santo Domingo, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said that Brazil hopes to "restart the Union of South American Nations on a new basis."

In a telephone interview with EFE, Vieira said: "The Union of South American Nations has played an important role and it is worth restarting it on a new basis. This basis includes the outcome of the dialogue with Member States. We will work in this direction. ”

On April 4, local time, the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement announcing that the Arab side had notified the member states of the Argentine government's decision to rejoin the Association of South American Nations, and formally requested the organization to approve the restoration of the membership of the Albanian side in accordance with the constitution of the alliance.

Argentine Foreign Minister Cafiero said that the Argentine government decided to resume membership in the Union of South American Nations in order to strengthen economic and trade ties with countries in the region and promote the organization's institution-building and regional integration process.

Argentine President Alberto Fernández announced on March 3 that Argentina had decided to rejoin the Union of South American Nations.

Fernández has stressed "the need to create a regional organization as a mechanism for self-defense" and suggested that Brazil and Argentina join forces to give the Union of South American Nations more power.

This is the latest move by the current Argentine government to promote regional integration in Latin America.

Union of South American Nations

The Union of South American Nations was formed in May 2008, facilitated by Lula and the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. At that time, there were 5 Member States, namely Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Guyana and Suriname.

This regional alliance aims to build a multi-participatory, regionally recognized integration mechanism for cultural, social, economic and political co-development. The Secretariat is located in Quito, the capital of Ecuador.

In March 2019, eight countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay and Peru, signed a declaration announcing the creation of the Forum for the Progress of South America to replace the Union of South American Nations. In April of the same year, Argentina announced its formal withdrawal from the Union of South American Nations. Colombia, Brazil and other countries have also announced their withdrawal from the alliance.

In late January, Brazil's new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, visited Argentina and met with Fernandez. After the meeting, the leaders of the two countries issued a statement saying that they are willing to work together to deepen bilateral relations and promote regional integration, strengthen the role of MERCOSUR, reactivate the Union of South American Nations, and advance discussions on the establishment of a South American common currency.
