Parts of the pipes that supply Kiruna with district heating and drinking water will soon be affected by cracks and deformations in the ground, which jeopardizes, among other things, the heating of Kiruna.

As part of the urban transformation, new pipelines will therefore be built that secure the energy supply to the district heating network with waste heat from LKAB.

Ticking time bomb

In many places in Sweden, the VA system is a ticking time bomb. These are old, worn and leaking water and sewage pipes and district heating pipes that need to be replaced. Some wires are over a hundred years old.

According to Jan Fjordell, the winning ticket for the people of Kiruna is that LKAB is responsible for the cost. This is for the pipelines affected by ground movements and the pipelines that are part of the transformation of society into the new Kiruna center.

No need to pay everything

"The whole urban transformation is a great opportunity I would like to say that it is the people of Kiruna who benefit from this. The advantage we get is that we don't have to replace all the old pipes. In up to 30 percent of our network, we receive compensation from LKAB," he says.
