Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202305h00, March 31, 2023

INTERVIEW - On February 2, 2023, the discovery of a Chinese spy balloon by the US Department of Defense reignited tensions between the two superpowers. A maneuver that has a meteorological objective for the Chinese and considered malicious on the side of the Americans. Espionage is considered one of the oldest occupations in the world. Spies began using airships as early as the late eighteenth century. This innovative technology made it possible to collect enemy intelligence more efficiently. But how has aerial espionage evolved? How does the international community define peacetime espionage? Virginie Girod receives the historian Stéphane Genêt, specialist in the history of espionage and international relations in the eighteenth century. For Stéphane Genêt: "Air espionage changes in modern times when diplomatic rules and structures are put in place." Find this interview in "Au Cœur de l'Histoire", a Europe 1 Studio production.

Topics covered: Espionage – Aviation – Collection – Intelligence – Cuban Missile Crisis – Cold War – Moby Dick
