The six people appear to be from two families, one of Romanian origin and the other of Indian nationality. " said Lee-Ann O'Brien, deputy chief of local police, at a press conference. Among them, a child under 3 years old. An autopsy and toxicology analysis is underway to determine the cause of death.

Their bodies were found Thursday in a swampy area of the Akwesasne Indian Reserve, whose territory touches Quebec, Ontario and the United States. They were near an overturned boat belonging to a man from this community, who is still missing.

«

We believe they were trying to enter the U.S. illegally from Canada," O'Brien said. A second child from the Romanian family, whose passport was found on one of the bodies, has not yet been found, and police are continuing their search, she said.

This incident comes just eight days after the closure of Roxham Road, through which hundreds of migrants passed daily between the United States and Quebec. A path that is a hundred kilometers from the Akwesasne reserve, says our correspondent in Quebec City, Pascale Guéricolas.

In March, a smuggler was sentenced to five years in prison for transporting Indians in a boat to the same location. The passengers were not wearing life jackets and could not swim.
