The surgeon, a man in his 30s, was employed at Skåne University Hospital (Sus) in Lund at the beginning of last year.

According to the preliminary investigation, the abuse itself has taken off considerably during the spring. He and the a few years younger girlfriend first developed a cocaine addiction which then devolved into them also buying and smoking heroin.

Just over a week before the police intervention in the apartment, the man had bought 200 grams of heroin from a dealer in Malmö worth almost SEK 90,000.

Workplace visits

In interrogation, the surgeon describes that they smoked heroin every day after that until the police operation. During that time, the surgeon worked on call night at the hospital three times.

After the surgeon was arrested by police, Sus has dismissed him and made an ivo report listing a total of 14 patients operated on by the surgeon.

The surgeon himself does not want to comment on whether he used drugs at the workplace, but his girlfriend says that she has visited him several times at work and had drugs with her.

In its IVO notification, the hospital writes that there have been no deviation cases regarding the surgeon's professional practice.

Admitting to the crime

The trial in Lund District Court, where the surgeon and his girlfriend are charged with serious drug offences, has been ongoing during the week. Judgment is expected on Monday.

They both confess to the crime. The surgeon is also charged with assaulting his girlfriend, something he denies.
