The doctor Oriol Lafau, who occupied the sixth place of the list of the PSOE to the Balearic Parliament for Mallorca for the elections of 28M, has renounced his candidacy after it was made public that he is a father by surrogacy.
Lafau, regional coordinator of Mental Health, has informed the party of his resignation as a member of the electoral list "for personal reasons", as reported by the organization in a statement on Thursday.
Prominent members of the Balearic PSOE, following the publication on Wednesday of the news that the presenter Ana Obregón had resorted to surrogacy in the US, publicly expressed their rejection of this practice, illegal in Spain. Among them, the Minister of Presidency, Public Function and Equality Mercedes Garrido.
The website "Mallorca Diario" has published this morning that Lafau was presented on the lists of the PSOE despite being a father by surrogacy, something that contradicts the policy of the Socialists.
The party expresses its respect for the decision of the former candidate and reaffirms "its commitment because the strategy of prevention and attention to mental health become during the next legislature one of the axes of health policy."
The sixth place on the list of the PSOE to the Parliament for Mallorca will be occupied by the candidate who appeared in the eighth position, Quim Torres, chief of staff of the president of the Government, Francina Armengol.
