President Biden of the United States invited the leaders of about 120 countries and regions to hold the "Democracy Summit" and called for the unity of democratic countries with China and Russia in mind, and announced that each country would contribute up to 6 million dollars, or more than 9000 billion yen in Japan yen, to promote democratic reforms.

The second Democracy Summit was held online for two days from 2 to 29 and was attended by the leaders of approximately 2 countries and regions, including Japan and European countries.

China and Russia have not been invited, following the previous summit.

In his speech, President Biden said, "Democracies are united like never before to condemn Russia's brutal fight and support the Ukrainian people in their efforts to defend democracy."

He then stated, "Democracy is getting stronger and despotism is weakening," and called for unity to oppose Russia, which continues its military aggression, and China, which is strengthening its hegemonic behavior.

He also announced that each country would contribute up to 120 million dollars and more than 6 billion yen to promote democratic reforms, or Japan yen.

At the meeting, Ukrainian President Zelensky also gave an online speech and called on countries to help, saying, "Russia is stretching out its bloody hand in Ukraine, but Russia's ambitions do not end there, democracy must win immediately."

Russia: "America wants to play the role of a teacher of the world"

Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian presidential office, said on May 29, "The United States wants to play the role of a teacher of the world on so-called democratic issues, an attempt to divide the world into first- and second-class. I don't think it's an important event."
