The EU has common rules on driving and resting times for vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes. With regard to certain exceptions, the driver may drive for a maximum of 9 hours per day. After 4 hours and 30 minutes behind the wheel, a full or a split break of 45 minutes should be taken.

"It's going in the right direction"

In 2021, the police in Norrbotten seized 21 driver cards and four manipulated tachographs. The following year, eight people who had driven on someone else's driver's license were taken to be able to drive longer than is allowed.

"It's going in the right direction. Hauliers and drivers realize it's not worth it in the long run, Franklin said.

Does not reveal how the cheat is revealed

The police are secretive about how the cheating itself takes place and how it is discovered.

"We analyze the cards and tachographs we bring in, the rest is a professional secret," Franklin says.
