• Interior The gaps in Marlaska's comprehensive plan to protect victims of sexist violence

A 63-year-old woman of British nationality has been murdered this morning in Orihuela (Alicante) in a case that points to gender violence. Her husband, the alleged perpetrator, is hospitalized for a stab wound to the belly.

The alleged murderer appears in the Viogen database for a case that was opened ex officio by the Civil Guard in 2019 but was inactive the following year due to the absence of a complaint by the victim, the woman who died this Sunday, as reported by the Government delegate in the Valencian Community, Pilar Barnabas.

At that time, no judicial measures were put in place and the case became inactive in 2020, explained the delegate. Information is being collected about this murder, which points to a case of sexist violence, according to Barnabas.

If confirmed, the number of women killed by gender-based violence would rise to 11 in 2023 and 1,195 since 2003.

This morning, about 04.00 hours, the Civil Guard has received a phone call from a neighbor and the agents have moved to the home of a couple of British nationality, in Orihuela coast, where they found the deceased woman after receiving several stab wounds.

The 69-year-old man has been arrested and is hospitalized for a stab wound to the belly. The couple resided in Spain since 2017, according to sources of the investigation.
